You've taken enough coloring classes and courses to be comfortable and confident with your markers and colored pencils.
You're very good at coloring as long as you have a class project to work on.
Your skills are improving... So why does it feel like there's still something missing?
Why don't you feel like an artist yet?
Techniques are not enough.
Coloring classes, courses, and workshops are designed to spark your interest and keep you buying fresh classes. New techniques, new images, new color palettes. Learn something new. Try something new.
But new-new-new isn't the way we learn, grow, and develop into an artist. If you're always trying something new, you're never truly mastering anything.
Artistry, real skill, and amazing creativity comes from practicing until the new technique becomes an ingrained skill. You have to absorb it via repetition to make it a permanent part of you.
But practice isn't natural.
First, we're busy. Practice takes time. So if you're going to reserve a large bit of your free time for coloring exercise, it must be practical and effective.
Next, what should you practice? You've tried the challenge downloads and while it feels comforting to have a prepared list, how are you supposed to practice prompt words like bloom, temptation, or ennui?
And practice by yourself is not fun. You start out with the best of intentions but the mind wanders and without proper support, our dedication falters.
Join the Practice Corner
let's take the next step together
Join Frankie & Kathy in a new community.
Frankie is in corporate management
She directs E-Commerce for a major retail chain; she has no formal art training.
She picked up her first Copic marker in 2015 and quickly tapped into a creative spirit she never knew she had. She's taken dozens of online classes and courses but her real growth started when she began a formal practice routine with her challenge partner Kathy.
Kathy is in administration & technology
She organized admin systems for a large HMO, now she runs the Vanilla Arts website system.
Kathy has always been crafty. She quilted and designed embroidery machine patterns but drawing is something she never thought she could do. She took her first Copic coloring class in 2016 and soon put her design skills to work creating custom images to color the kind of still life scenes she sees in her dreams.
They teamed up to practice.
In the process, they became artists.
Now they're sharing their practice strategies with you!
The Practice Corner is a community of like-minded intermediate to advanced colorers who want to hone the techniques and methods they've learned here at Vanilla Arts and in other classes.
Frankie keeps you inspired and motivated with regular videos and discussions.
Kathy shares digital stamps and challenge prompts designed to help you narrow in on the skills you most need to master.
And both of them offer the kind of support you can only get from another artist-in-training. Someone who understands where you're starting and where you want to go, because they've been there too!

The path to independent artistry.
The Practice Corner is a place to share the joy of learning in a supportive community of creative people.
We focus on honing techniques and strengthening skills.
This is not a group for creating beautiful art journals, impressive Instagram feeds, or framable art. We practice to develop proficiency not projects.
If you're ready to practice effectively and strengthen your skills, this is the community for you.
Please note: the Practice Corner is NOT a class.
This is not an introduction to beginner marker/pencil techniques. There are no project tutorials and no guided step by step instruction. This group is designed to support independent study by intermediate to advanced level students who are already familiar with Copic Markers and colored pencil.
